More than 550,000 Ukrainian families lost electricity after Russia launched a massive overnight attack on energy facilities and other critical infrastructure, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Monday, October 19.

“Another Russian ballistic missile attack came in several waves overnight, and once again, there was no early warning from our partners,” Zelensky wrote on X.

He said the strikes damaged energy facilities, infrastructure, a medical clinic, a school, a metro station and residential buildings. More than 10 energy infrastructure facilities were damaged during the attack, while repair crews began working at the affected sites.

According to Zelensky, Russia launched 16 ballistic missiles and more than 200 drones of various types, including jet-powered Shahed drones. He also reported casualties and expressed condolences to the families of those killed.

“Ukraine never wanted this war, and we responded positively to literally EVERY attempt by our partners to end this war honorably—to EVERY ceasefire proposal, our answer was positive,” Zelensky wrote.

He added, “Ballistics, ‘Shaheds,’ and killings are, again and again, Russia’s responses.”

Zelensky accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of refusing to end the war or take steps toward de-escalation. He called on Ukraine’s partners to recognize Russia as the aggressor and help protect Ukrainian lives.
